The Benefits & Science of Drinking Celery Juice

The Benefits & Science of Drinking Celery Juice

When starting any new venture, it’s important to know why you’re doing it. That "why" has turned celery juice into a wellness mega trend. From creating clearer skin to fighting autoimmune disease, the benefits of drinking celery juice are just beginning to be explored.

But it’s important to know whether those benefits are claims from the source of this trend (Medical Medium Anthony William), from science, or from someone’s first-hand experience. We’ll look at all the benefits of celery juice within the context of those categories.

Why Drink Celery Juice?

That’s what we all want to know, right? Why is this ants-on-a-log vegetable taking over the world? Our liver plays a massive role in our health. According to William, celery juice is an incredible liver cleanser. William links a large amount of chronic issues back to the liver—a connection science hasn’t fully made itself. If this holistic approach views the parts of your body as a team, your liver is an MVP.

What Are the Benefits of Drinking Celery Juice?

The main benefit of drinking celery juice is its ability to cleanse the liver.

Other than being your second largest organ, the liver performs a staggering 500 tasks to keep the body healthy. When you consider this, it makes perfect sense that a juice capable of cleansing the liver would be a healing force in the body.

In his book Liver Rescue, Anthony William states that “celery juice is one of the most powerful and healing juices we can drink. Just 16 ounces of fresh celery juice every morning on an empty stomach can transform your health and digestion in as little as one week.”

You can’t expect to drink celery juice for a week and see your world transform (although your skin probably will). The most interesting results I’ve seen have come from people who’ve been drinking celery juice for at least a month, if not multiple years!

I highly recommend writing down why you’re drinking celery juice when you begin this journey and taking notes at least once a week to keep track of progress. It’s easy to dismiss shifts in our well-being if not acknowledged and appreciated.

Benefits of Celery Juice According to Science

I think it’s fair to say that many people are disillusioned with the medical system and its separatist school of thought. Treating symptoms instead of the whole person (physical, mental, and emotional health) will always be a bandaid.

Much of what Anthony William claims is in alignment with the holistic approach many people are adopting for themselves. The beauty of giving celery juice a sincere try is that you have everything to gain. And if there are no changes, oh well!

That being said, it’s important to take a balanced approach. Consult a medical doctor if and when needed. I think it’s helpful to take a look at what science does know about celery and its benefits, plus it’s interesting to see where they overlap. Ready to get started? How to Drink Celery Juice

Celery Juice Benefits According to Experience

The majority of celery juice drinkers reporting their results online tried it for a month or less. Which makes sense; it’s a huge trend and a bandwagon many creators want to jump on. But the testimonials that meant the most to my evaluation of celery juice were the long-term experiences.

Example #1:

This woman documented her 30-day celery juice challenge. When she started, she also removed various common allergens and inflammatory foods from her diet for the month. She ended the 30-day challenge early because her skin was really broken out. Though celery may have been the culprit, I would guess that the complete shift in her diet was too much for her system to handle.

This is an example of why it’s often better to make one change at a time and build on those changes as your body adapts.

Example #2:

This woman has been drinking celery juice every morning for three years. She lists a whole range of smaller and larger benefits from clear skin and healthy hair to improved digestion and gut healing. She specifically mentions that a long-term benefit of celery juice for her has been a reduction in anxiety, which she attributes to the mineral salt clusters fueling neurotransmitters in the brain.

Example #3:

“I started incorporating celery juice into my life in 2016. I’ve drank it intermittently and I’ve drank it daily for months on straight...It helped me every which way, but I saw the most drastic change when I was drinking it daily and freshly juiced.”

This woman’s experience highlights some of the same issues from example one but with a different approach. Through the ups and downs of the detox process, she listened to her body first, which is important for us all to learn.

“So I can tell you that after 5 months of daily celery juice it has gotten rid of ganglion cysts in my hands, painful periods, improved my acne, reduced the cysts in my breasts, reduced migraines, eliminated my IBS, and got rid of my tinnitus (ringing in my ears).”

Her review of drinking celery juice is one of the most thorough I found. She has some great tips for beginners:

Celery Juice & Healthy Skepticism

I’ve seen a lot of articles quick to dismiss celery juice, but who does that benefit? Certainly it’s always important to consult a doctor when needed; yet there is more for us to learn and discover about our health and well-being.

I started out writing this article with a healthy amount of skepticism. Having done a ridiculous amount of research—on not only celery juice and the Medical Medium, but on the current science on celery and firsthand experiences - I’m excited to learn even more. And I plan to try the liver detox for myself.

There's no doubt that Anthony William’s books have empowered a tremendous amount of people; I saw comment after comment, on unrelated social media accounts, speaking to the massive health improvements people have seen. You might ask yourself, does this resonate with me? Are there any limiting thoughts keeping me in my comfort zone? How great is it possible to feel?

Whatever the avenue to well-being that you choose, remember to celebrate how far you’ve already come and have fun along the way. Let us know if you’re drinking celery juice! We would love to hear about it.
